What is the role of an executor in an Islamic will?

Islamic Wills

In Islamic wills, the executor is called a Wasi. This is the person who will carry out your wishes after you die, including ensuring your estate is distributed according to Islamic principles.

Your Wasi will need to:

  • Arrange your funeral according to Islamic practices
  • Pay off any debts (which must be paid before any inheritance)
  • Calculate fixed inheritance shares correctly
  • Distribute your optional one-third bequests
  • Handle all legal and financial administration
  • Apply for probate and manage the estate through English law requirements

Choosing your Wasi:

Ideally, choose someone who:

  • Understands Islamic inheritance principles or is willing to seek expert guidance
  • Is trustworthy and organized
  • Can handle the administrative work
  • Lives in the UK (makes things easier)

Many Muslims choose:

  • A family member who understands Islamic principles
  • A family member plus an Islamic scholar or expert
  • A family member plus a professional executor

This ensures both proper Islamic distribution and competent legal administration.
