What counts as an asset in my estate?

General Wills

Your estate includes everything you own at the time of your death. This typically includes:

Property:

  • Your home (or your share if jointly owned)
  • Buy-to-let properties
  • Holiday homes
  • Land

Money:

  • Bank and savings accounts
  • ISAs
  • Premium bonds
  • Cash

Investments:

  • Shares and stocks
  • Bonds
  • Investment funds
  • Cryptocurrency

Pensions:

  • Some pensions can pass outside your estate (check with your provider)
  • Others form part of your estate

Personal possessions:

  • Jewelry
  • Vehicles
  • Art and antiques
  • Furniture
  • Collections

Business interests:

  • Company shares
  • Business partnerships

Digital assets:

  • Online accounts with value
  • Domain names
  • Digital media

However, jointly-owned property held as 'joint tenants' passes automatically to the surviving owner and doesn't form part of your estate. Life insurance policies written in trust also typically pass outside your estate.
