What is an Islamic will?
Islamic Wills
An Islamic will is a will that follows Islamic inheritance principles (Shariah) while also being legally valid under English law. It allows Muslims living in England and Wales to distribute their estate according to their faith.
An Islamic will includes two main components:
- Fixed shares (Faraid): Predetermined portions that go to specific family members as prescribed in Islamic law
- Optional bequests (Wasiyyah): Up to one-third of your estate that you can leave to anyone you choose
Islamic inheritance rules don't automatically apply in England and Wales - you must create a will that specifically implements these principles. Without an Islamic will, your estate would be distributed according to English intestacy rules, which are very different from Islamic requirements.
